Energy Transmission & Distribution

The demand for energy increases relentlessly every year. Getting this energy to the points of demand are an ever present challenge to both the power and gas industries. As demand increases, the pressure on transmission and distribution networks in both power and gas grows and significant investment and developments will be required to ensure that the security of supply is both maintained and optimised.

In Electricity transmission it has has estimated that the current network transmission and distribution capacity will need to be increased by up to 25% just to cope with the introduction of wind power and this is only one of a number of new energy sources being introduced and part of the UK’s integrated energy mix strategy. The existing distribution network was largely built in the 50′s and 60′s and much of it is in need of investment to extend its life or needs replacing.

In the case of gas, market pressures across the globe and the need to secure future supplies are driving huge investments in the search for new sources. Across Europe, innovation is now creating change with investment in new facilities such as LNG terminals and large scale bio-methanation plants, all of which need to be connected to the transmission and distribution networks.

In the Oil & Gas (O&G) sector, operating companies face Global competition that is squeezing profitability, they must find ways of exploiting their assets more effectively and optimise operational and business process at all stages in the supply chain and especially in the fields of gas storage and gas importation.

Combining the issues of new and increased capacity with the growth in new connections is probably the largest programme of work that the energy transmission and distribution industry has faced in many years and this has to be solved in a commercial environment that is highly regulated, has ever increasing financial demands by its various stakeholders and in one which must take account of the carbon reduction requirements.

The Transmission and Distribution networks of both the power and gas sectors therefore face enormous challenges that must be addressed and solved over the coming years. Fortech specialises in providing specialised solutions to support the industry in this area and has diverse expertise covering engineering, planning, design, systems, trading, commercial management and general programme governance.

The operational areas served by Fortech in the Gas & Electricity sectors are;

Transmission
Gas and Electricity, are transmitted in high capacity national transmission networks. They are the backbone by which a very large proportion of our energy is moved around the country. The Transmission systems are a critical part of our energy supply infrastructure and feed the distribution networks that ultimately deliver energy to businesses and households.
Distribution
The Gas and Electricity Distribution networks are the infrastructure that connects the transmission networks to the end customers. They are again a critical part of the national energy infrastructure supply chain and the efficient management of the electricity and gas in these distribution networks is vital in order to meet demand, security of supply and costs.
Storage and Importation
The Gas and Electricity Distribution networks are the infrastructure that connects the transmission networks to the end customers. They are again a critical part of the national energy infrastructure supply chain and the efficient management of the electricity and gas in these distribution networks is vital in order to meet demand, security of supply and costs.
Utility Infrastructure Providers (UIPs)
In a number of European countries and particularly in the UK, specialist companies have been created to design, develop and operate gas and electricity infrastructures. Opportunities exist to increase efficiencies and reduce costs by creating a competitive landscape and deliver the required new or replacement infrastructure quickly.
Industry Regulators, Data Administration and Arbitration Providers
The Gas and Electricity industries are both competitive and highly regulated. This has led to the formation of both Regulator organizations and Industry ‘arbitrators’. These organizations set legally enforceable performance and operational targets for suppliers, which provide guidelines for operational governance and encouragement to comply with new directives.
